Keyboard Vs Piano

1. The keys-touch & feel

One of the significant variations between the two instruments is the keys. The piano’s keys are heavier, thanks to the weight of the hammers. For this reason, playing piano feels more organic since the pressure applied impacts directly on its dynamics. Moreover, you have more control over the piano, and this applies to dynamics and musicality.

On the other hand, the keyboard can’t match the piano regarding play abilities. Nonetheless, they are catching up, and many are now touch-sensitive. Most keyboard models lack the dynamic range of the piano. In most cases, you have to control the sound using the knob. What of the keyboard keys? These are lighter compared to the piano’s which is a plus. They make Learning keyboards easier for beginners.

2. Durability & Maintenance

If well maintained, pianos can last for many years. This is simple, though. You should store your device in a safe place, free from dampness or mold. Moreover, it’s not easy to maintain them the DIY way, making it a bit costly. If you care for your piano, you won’t have to worry much about maintenance, though. Your machine will last longer and still function optimally.

Keyboards are also long-lasting, particularly digital models. Quality models can last for decades if maintained appropriately. But, if you go for cheaper models, you expect them to malfunction after a few years. The difference lies in maintenance. Keyboards require minimal maintenance since they feature no keys or hammers. You only need to keep the keyboard dry, clean and not overload the power outlets.

3. Weight variations

Pianos are heavier, and the smallest weighs about 400-500 lbs. large pianos can weigh 1200 lbs or more. Due to their bulky nature, it’s not easy to move pianos with ease. Unlike pianos, keyboards are pretty light and portable. You can move them by yourself or in the car. In terms of functionality, pianos produce one sound in a range of dynamics and notes. With keyboards, you can alter the sound to match varying musical requirements.

4. Price

Most piano models are costly and don’t fit the budget of many beginners. If you go for the piano, you should consider the initial cost and the maintenance cost, making a piano a costly investment. Similarly, you can get a keyboard at a reasonable amount but must cough a significant amount of dollars for the high-end models.

A quick wrap up

You can acquire a piano or a keyboard depending on your intended use, available space, and budget. If you want something portable, a keyboard would be ideal. But if you want that organic feel while playing, and don’t mind the cost, consider a piano. Whatever your choice, buy from reputed dealers and enroll for music lessons in a top-rated school.
